Unlike the three Graces of the Holy Trinity of jazz prima donnas, Ella , Billie and Sarah , Carmen did not achieve fame until her late thirties. In Europe, we even had to wait until the 1970s to finally hear him in concert.
This skinned woman, not always good company, revealed herself to be the most expressive of singers/ballad tellers, a high-flying stylist with a cello voice, at the same artistic altitude as her friends Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan , plain and simple. -foot with the jazz giants of her generation, whom she had frequented musically and emotionally, Kenny Clarke , whom she had married, Dizzy Gillespie , Charlie Parker , Monk ...
