For more than thirty years, the “ Jazz Messengers ” contributed to the influence of jazz throughout the world. This group, most often quintet or sextet , was founded in 1954 by drummer Art Blakey and pianist Horace Silver . Hosted from 1956 by Blakey alone, it was the standard bearer of dynamic music which loudly affirmed the essential virtues of jazz , the swing of swing and the color of blues.

Art Blakey's " messengers " were also the breeding ground for a multitude of great talents: trumpeters Lee Morgan , Freddie Hubbard , Wynton Marsalis , Terence Blanchard, saxophonists Johnny Griffin , Benny Golson , Wayne Shorter , pianists Bobby Timmons , Cedar Walton , Keith Jarrett , Donald Brown , Mulgrew Miller , to name just a few, became known within them.
